There is nothing like a western North Carolina backpacking trip to rejuvenate the soul! Pisgah National Forest is located southwest of Asheville, east of the Smokies. On weekends it attracts many outdoor enthusiasts, though an hour off an established trail will leave one in remote solitude. The weather is always problematical; on this trip there were not many clear days - especially at the upper elevations. The paintings of Fog at Black Balsam and Sam's Knob were opportunistic - whenever I could get a glimpse through the mist, I painted like mad. |
